What Speeds Up (and What Slows Down) Your Metabolism
By Vanessa Manfredini | Biomedical Scientist and Future Nutritionist
"Oh, I gain weight just by looking at food, my metabolism is slow." 🙃 Who hasn't said or heard that? Metabolism has become the favorite villain whenever weight is the topic. But is it really the main culprit in this story?
Today, we're separating myth from science, in a light and liberating way. Because understanding your metabolism is, in fact, regaining control. Come with me! 🌿
"Most of the time, the problem isn't a broken metabolism. It's the set of habits."
What is metabolism, after all? 🔥
Simply put, metabolism is the set of processes your body uses to transform what you eat into energy for living: breathing, thinking, heart beating, moving. ➡️ And here's something interesting: most of this expenditure happens at rest, just to keep you functioning, even when lying on the couch.
What Helps Metabolism Function Well 💪
🍳 Dietary protein: in addition to preserving muscles, the body expends more energy just to digest it.
🚶 Movement throughout the day: not just exercise, but also walking, taking the stairs, and being less sedentary.
😴 Quality sleep: poor sleep disrupts the hormones that regulate hunger and energy expenditure.
What Slows It Down (and the Myths That Need to Fall) 🚫
Prepare for a surprise: the biggest sabotager of metabolism is often overly restrictive diets. When you cut too many calories for too long, your body adapts, loses muscle, and starts to conserve energy. It's the famous "plateau" that frustrates so many.
And the biggest myth of all: metabolism doesn't vary as dramatically between people as is often said. Studies suggest it remains relatively stable for much of adult life. ➡️ In other words, the problem is rarely a "broken" metabolism.
Key Takeaways from This Text 🌱
You have much more control over your metabolism than you imagine, and that is liberating. Not with miraculous tricks, but with the basics done well: muscle strength, good nutrition, movement, and rest.
"Taking care of your metabolism is taking care of your habits. And habits are within your reach."
