Weight Gain After 40: What Changes (and How to Care for It)
By Vanessa Manfredini | Biomedical Scientist and future Nutritionist
You do almost everything as you always have, but after 40, the scale seems to have a mind of its own? 🌸 If you feel this way, breathe: this isn't a lack of willpower. Your body changes during this phase, and understanding why is the first step to caring for it with kindness. Come with me! 🌿
"After 40, the body asks for a new strategy, not more punishment."
Why weight changes after 40 🔄
Several factors come into play simultaneously, and one influences the other:
💪 Muscle mass loss: from this age onwards, we tend to lose muscle, which is the engine of metabolism.
🔥 Slower metabolism: with less muscle, the body burns a little less energy.
😴 Sleep and stress: poor sleep and a hectic pace disrupt hunger hormones.
It's not a lack of willpower 💚
We need to repeat this: the body after 40 responds differently, and that's biology, not weakness. The same diet as before may simply no longer work, and that's okay. The way forward isn't to demand more from yourself, but to adjust your strategy.
What really helps 🌱
The good news is that you can take care of this in a gentle and effective way:
🏋️♀️ Strength exercises: nothing beats them for maintaining and building muscle.
🥦 Fiber and whole foods: more satiety and less blood sugar fluctuation.
😴 Quality sleep: taking care of it helps control hunger.
🚫 No radical diets: they cause muscle loss and usually make everything worse.
"Caring for your body after 40 is about strength and strategy, not about the scale."
