If you've opened any social media in recent months, you've probably come across cortisol being treated as the main culprit for everything: the stubborn belly fat, the puffy face, fatigue, anxiety. 🌿 As a biomedical scientist, I need to tell you something: cortisol is not the villain of the story. In fact, you wouldn't live a single day without it. Come with me to understand what science truly says. 💚

What is cortisol, after all?
Cortisol is a hormone produced by the adrenal glands, located just above the kidneys. It is often called the "stress hormone," but this nickname tells only part of the story. Cortisol participates in essential functions: it helps regulate blood sugar, controls blood pressure, influences metabolism, modulates the immune response, and even helps the body wake up in the morning.
In other words, it's not a body error. It's a survival tool very well adjusted over millions of years.
The natural rhythm of cortisol 🕗
One thing almost no one mentions on social media is that cortisol has a rhythm throughout the day. It tends to be higher in the morning, to give you energy and readiness to start the day, and gradually decreases over the hours, becoming lower at night when the body prepares for rest.
This pattern is known as circadian rhythm. When it functions well, it's a sign of balance. When it's turned upside down, due to poor sleep or chronic stress, that's when the body starts to feel it.
And the famous "cortisol face" and "cortisol belly"? 🤔
Here's where I need to be very honest with you. Terms like "cortisol face" (puffy face) and "cortisol belly" have gone viral, but they oversimplify something that is complex.
There is indeed a real medical condition where cortisol is chronically elevated, called Cushing's syndrome, and it can cause changes in the face and abdominal fat accumulation. But this is a relatively rare condition, with a specific medical diagnosis. It is not the explanation for the occasional puffiness that most people experience.
Facial puffiness and belly fat have many possible causes: diet, fluid retention, sleep, genetics, phase of the hormonal cycle, salt and alcohol consumption, among others. Blaming only cortisol can make you ignore what is truly happening.
What science says about keeping cortisol balanced 🌱
The good news is that the habits that help keep cortisol at a healthy rhythm are the same ones that already take care of your overall health. No magic formula, but rather consistency:
What about "anti-cortisol" supplements? 💊
You've probably seen a flood of supplements promising to "control cortisol." Some ingredients, like certain adaptogens, have interesting preliminary studies, but the science is still limited, and none of them replace the pillars I mentioned above. No supplement compensates for sleepless nights and constant stress. And, as I always say, supplementation is a topic to discuss with a professional, considering your specific case.
